Why The Tasmanian Lobster?

The Tasmanian Giant Freshwater Lobster is an endemic species to northern Tasmania.
  1. There have been localized extinctions and substantial declines in population size of the Tasmanian Giant Freshwater Loberster have occurred in at least 12 rivers (Sinclair, 2010). They only live in 12 rivers.

  2. Prior to the ban on A. gouldi fishing which commenced in 1998, catches were estimated to be in excess of 10 000 individuals per year (Hamilton, 2014.)

3.   This species has seen a 70% decline within its range and an estimated 80% decline in abundance within the last 50 years (3 generation lengths). (Hamilton, 2014.)

 

4.   At sites that are relatively accessible to humans (close to roads), the proportion of mature individuals can be as low as 5% compared to 40% in relatively inaccessible sites (Hobart, 2006)
